Leaving a gift to charity in your will is a very personal decision. There are many benefits, both financial and emotional, to making a legacy donation.

We know that our community is very charitable and generous when it comes to supporting us, and we have received enquiries about legacy donations, so we created this basic information page to answer some of the common questions.

Of course, looking after family and friends will always be your priority. If you do decide to leave a legacy donation, no matter the size, you’ll be helping to make a change for women and children experiencing domestic abuse so they may live free of fear and harm.

We like to stress that there is no obligation to leave a gift in your will. Whatever you decide, it’s important that it’s your choice and is a cause that means something to you.

Wording

Your Solicitor will be familiar with the wording required to leave a gift in your will.

Can I update my existing will?

You can add a codicil for minor changes to your will, including the addition of a charity. When you speak to your Solicitor, they will advise if this is the best option for you. If you are making several changes, it may be best to re-write your will.

Can I specify how I’d like my gift to be used?

Yes- You can specify how you would like your gift to be used and we promise to respect your wishes.

Will my gift be taxed?

No- Gifts to charities are exempt from inheritance tax and this can be a way of reducing exposure of your estate to tax. For more information, visit the HM Revenue & Customs website.

How much does a gift need to be to make a difference?

Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference to the lives of the women and children we support. Although some gifts are large ones, the majority are not, and it is what these gifts achieve together that makes them so important and appreciated.
